Palmer Park Mural Project

In 2005, The Center's mural conservators cleaned James Edward McBurney's murals at the Palmer Park Field House. The mural series illustrates the history of Illinois through three narrative vignettes:

• Indian Maidens, with a group of Native-American women on the dunes surveying Lake Michigan.
• Father Marquette & Louis Joliet, where the two central figures are depicted in a canoe with Native-American scouts investigating what would become the Illinois Territory.
• Early American Settlers shows a couple in front of their farmhouse in this newly settled region.
